I first met Dr. Quintana and the staff of Natural Therapies and Spa in February 2006. I had been doing alternative treatments for metastatic melanoma since it had spread to my liver and lymphatic system almost 2 years earlier. A significant lump had formed in my head. I knew I needed to do more than I was doing. I was scared. I was afraid to come to Mexico, not speaking or understanding the language. But I was more afraid the cancer would get to my brain and take me down. In 2004, I was told I wouldn't make it through the summer. I know very few people who have survived melanoma after it spread to any organs.
They were amazing. I met people from different parts of the United States, from Spain, Australia, Sweden and Canada. They treated all of us like family. I had never been around a more compassionate group of medical people. Without them, I don't think I would have made it.
I was here for three weeks the first time, then came for a week of treatments about 6 months later. Because melanoma doesn't show up in blood work, I have to constantly monitor myself. I came back twice for one week tune-ups when there was no evidence of cancer. I'm here again now. I had, what to me, was a major stress a few months ago. Within about six weeks of trying to figure out how I was going to fix my problem, and coming up with no solutions, another lump had formed in my head, in a lymph node in my armpit and in my breast. So...here I am. I've been here a week, and already the lumps are shrinking. I'm expecting my second week will completely take care of them. I continue with the home protocol once I get home. I always have. When I'm here, we pull out the fire hose. Once I'm back in everyday life, being a mom, going to work, working out, it's my job to do whatever it takes to keep my body healthy and manage the cancer. My diet and the other things I do make me feel good. Cancer or not. Sometimes it seems like a hassle to have to get in the sauna, but the benefits far outweigh the alternative!
