Norman and I just returned from a three week sojourn in Mexico. We did not go for fun or adventure; we went for cancer treatment. In February, my husband was diagnosed with rather advanced and aggressive prostate cancer. His Gleeson score was 8 (10 being the worst), and he had a palpable tumor. As you may know, the conventional options for treating prostate cancer in his case, radical surgery, radiation, or cryotherapy with hormone ablation are pretty horrific, with terrible, even crippling side effects. The doctors were not always forthcoming about those side effects, despite our pointed questions.

To buy time until we could decide what course of action seemed best, Norman received homeopathic treatment and special supplements. Finally, after much research, he decided on Natural Therapies Clinic in Mexico, partly because an acquaintance, whod suffered from an almost identical prostate cancer, had been successfully treated by their methods fifteen years earlier. Natural Therapies -- specifically Thomas Petersen, the administrator -- was also outstanding in keeping in touch with us and letting us know exactly what treatments my husband needed.

What we found at Natural Therapies far exceeded our expectations. Instead of a clinical atmosphere, it was like staying in a small but very nice hotel where our needs and wants had been anticipated and met beautifully. The staff was kind and loving; the food delicious and plentiful; Dr. Quintana was thorough, conscientious, and altogether wonderful and instantly available to answer our questions. Norman was in treatment 7 hours a day, but the therapies were non-invasive and designed to build up his immune system, not suppress it. There were no adverse side effects. Its hard to imagine a cancer treatment that leaves you, at the end, feeling stronger and healthier than when you started. But this did. The hardest part of the whole three weeks, as Norman says, were the plane rides!

When we arrived at the clinic, we learned that the cancer had already been positively affected by homeopathy and the supplements, but Normans PSA was 7.3. After two weeks of treatment, his PSA was 1.0. We are looking forward to see how it fares in future tests, but our expectation is that it will continue to go down.

Norman was far more skeptical than I about alternative cancer treatment, but we were both apprehensive about going to Mexico, for the newspapers were full of stories about violence in Mexican cities on the Texas border. Would there be gunfights in the streets? Were we at risk of being kidnapped?

These thoughts seem ludicrous to us now and very much the product of the American medias preference for the dramatic and the bloody. It took only a day or two at Natural Therapies to convince us that we were absolutely safe and secure. Soon, like most patients there, we left the door to our suite unlocked, knowing that no one except Alicia, the housekeeper, would enter without our permission. The city of Tijuana lay far below us and was quiet. We didnt see much of it (except for a lovely shopping mall), but in the little free time my husband had we were able to make side trips to Rosarito, Ensenada, and the wine country of the Guadalupe Valley.

We learned a lot in those weeks about alternative treatments and diet for cancer patients and would be happy to share what we learned. This path may not be for everyone, but it doesnt hurt to know there are effective, safe, and benign options for treating cancer. Unfortunately, though widely used in Europe, Mexico, and elsewhere, they still arent offered in the U.S. (If you want to know why were so far behind, read Ralph Mosss book, The Cancer Industry.
